Virginia Blankenbaker was born Virginia Murphy in Indianapolis on 29 March 1933. She attained degrees from Purdue University in Lafayette and Butler University in Indianapolis. She married Richard I. Blankenbaker and they have five children. Beginning in the 1950s she worked as a teacher, a home economist, and an investment banker. Blankenbaker's political career began in 1980 when she was elected to her first term in the Indiana State Senate and served until 1996. Blankenbaker now lives in Wilmette, Illinois, and was recently appointed to the Washington D.C. based Rural School Community Trust Board.
