Orde Charles Wingate (b. Feb. 26, 1903, India-d. March 24, 1944, India), Major-General in the British Army, received his gunnery officer's commission in 1923. He saw action in the 1936-1939 Arab revolt in Palestine, and during the Second World War in the East African campaign and the Burma campaign. He was an early ardent supporter of Zionism. While on a mission he died in a plane crash in Northeast India.
