The Student Body Association of the Department of Architecture organized originally in 1896 as "The Night Owl Sketch Club." The purpose of the club was to arrange for informal gatherings of students, faculty, and practicing architects. It assumed responsibility for the publication of the department's year book in 1897 and continued in this capacity until 1901, when the department took over the function. By 1903 the group arranged fund raising events to promote the school and add to its library collections. It continued to organize social events from small gatherings to large, formal balls.
