Montevallo Coal Mining Company (Ala.)
The company was incorporated in Ala. on 1863 May 25, and operated near Montevallo, Shelby Co., Ala. Its board of directors met not only there, but at Montgomery, Montgomery Co., Ala., and in Selma, Dallas Co., Ala., and initially included W.W. Waller, also president; Joel Riggs, also secretary and treasurer; J.R. Kenan, also general superintendent, Thomas R. Watts, James H. Smith, Lewis E. Parsons, and Alex White. The company was capitalized initially at $200,000, and was created by purchasing the Ala. Coal Mining Co., 1863 May 21. Changes in the new company's board of directors and capitalization are reflected in its minutes.
During the Civil War the company furnished coal from the Aldrich mine to the Central Foundry at Selma, Dallas Co., Ala., where cannons were made for the Confederacy.
