National Institute of Dramatic Art was founded at the University of New South Wales in 1959 under the auspices of the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust and in association with the A.B.C. The school provides training for those who wish to enter the theatrical profession as actors, directors, designers and stage managers. In 1955 the Old Tote and The Institute were associated with the first season of Australian plays at the Jane Street Theatre, presented by a group of professional actors engaged in the National Institute of Dramatic Art advanced course.
