Anna Martin was born in Antigo, Wisconsin, in 1892, the daughter of a county judge. After completing her schooling in Antigo and losing her father and two brothers at early ages, Anna moved with her mother to California. She attended and graduated from Pomona College and received an M.A. degree from the University of California at Berkeley. She then taught biology and general sciences in highs schools in California and Washington. Following her mother's death, Anna pursued missionary work with the Presbyterian Church and was sent to Sitka, Alaska, where she taught at Sheldon Jackson Junior High School. Later, she taught at the Jesse Lee Home in Seward, Alaska. During her vacations, Anna took trips into Interior Alaska. She also took courses in religion and nursing. She spent three years on Saint Lawrence Island until evacuated in 1942 following the invasion of the Aleutian Islands by the Japanese during World War II. During the summer of 1942, she served as a church hostess in Palmer, Alaska. She eventually returned to Saint Lawrence Island as a Sunday school missionary. Her last years in Alaska were spent as a nurse's aid at the Methodist Hospital in Seward. After retiring in 1956, Anna returned to Antigo. She continued to be active in church organizations and the local chapter of the Wisconsin Writers Club. She wrote and published a memoir, "Around and About Alaska." Anna passed away in 1968.
