Lloyd (Chudley) Alexander was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on January 30, 1924. He is best known as a children's book author whose works include The Black Cauldron, The Marvelous Misadventures of Sebastian, and Westmark. Before becoming a children's book author, however, Alexander struggled to become a professional author of any kind. His first published works, done shortly after Alexander returned from army service stationed in Paris, were translations of French poetry and fiction. In 1955 Alexander published his first original work, the semi-autobiographical adult book And Let the Credit Go. Several more adult books met with modest success, and Alexander gradually turned his attention to juvenile audiences. He began garnering attention with the publication of his Prydain series in the 1960s, culminating in 1969 with the award of a Newbery Medal for The High King. After making a name for himself with the Chronicles of Prydain, Alexander published popular children's literature continuously for the next forty years. He is well-known for his Westmark fantasy trilogy and the Vesper Holly adventures. Lloyd Alexander's final book, The Golden Dream of Carlo Chuchio, appeared in print in summer of 2007, just months after his death on May 17.
