Charles Wythe Gleaves Rich (b. Dec. 22, 1910, Va.-d. Aug. 24, 1993, Hilton Head, S.C.), U.S. Army officer, graduated from West Point in 1935 with a commission in the Infantry. His career highlights, during World War II, include commander, 2/19 Infantry, 24th Division, in the Pacific Theater; deputy chief of staff for operations, 6th Army Group, and deputy chief of staff, XXI Corps, both in the European Theater. During the 1950s he was commander, 15th Infantry, 3rd Division, Far East Command, and commandant of cadets, U.S. Military Academy. He later served as commanding general, 101st Airborne Division; commanding general, 3rd U.S. Army; and deputy commanding general, 8th U.S. Army. General Rich retired in 1970.
