William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition was named from William Lowell Putnam, Harvard College Class of 1882. In 1927 Mrs. Putnam established a fund to support such a mathematics competition in her husband's memory. After a few, and apparently unsatisfactory, dual meets, it was decided to hold an annual national contest in mathematics. This medal dates from one of the earliest competitions. It was awarded to Thomas J. Dolan, Harvard College Class of 1928.
