The Nineteenth Century Club

Hide Profile

The Nineteenth Century Club was a women's organization, founded in Sandusky on February 7, 1895. Its object was "the intellectual culture of its members," achieved primarily through members' presentations of lectures on literary and historical topics at club meetings. By rule, membership was limited to nineteen persons. Meetings were held weekly between October and April, at which a member would present a lecture on a cultural topic. The records of this organization end on March 25, 1943, as it apparently disbanded around that time. (Evidence found in documents of the Federation of Women's Clubs [box E-9] shows that the Nineteenth Century Club withdrew from the Federation around 1943.)
