Laurence H. MacDaniels was born in Fremont, Ohio, in 1888, and moved to Oberlin, Ohio, with his family in 1890. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Oberlin College in 1912, with a degree in economics; and, he finished his Ph.D. (Plant anatomy and Plant pathology) in 1917 from Cornell University. Remaining at Cornell, Laurence taught for almost forty years, retiring permanently in 1960. A well-known scholar, Laurence wrote several activities, as well co-authoring a popular 1925 textbook, Introduction to Plant Anatomy. Laurence married Frances Cochran (1891-1986), and raised two daughters. Their lives were exemplary in giving community service. Laurence was active in the American Society for Horticultural Science and the North American Lily Society, as well as Rotary Club and Boy Scouts. Frances served two terms with the Ithaca Common Council, the first woman to do so. Laurence H. and Frances MacDaniels both died in 1986.
