Hide Profile

Honan Glimpses was a publication of the Augustana Synod Mission, based in the Honan Province of China. It began publication in March of 1922 under the name Glimpses from Central Honan, changing to Honan Glimpses in December of 1923. Although it began as a mimeographed publication, by March of 1923 it was appearing as a printed paper. It was published ten times per year, with no issues during July and August when the missionaries came together for their annual conferences.

The paper was started as a newsletter between mission stations. As such, a reporter was assigned from each station, with the editorship taken by Gustav Carlberg for the life of the paper. Though it began with a modest printing of 60 copies, within a year it had expanded its subscription list to 1000, including many from the United States interested in the Chinese mission work. Publication was abruptly ended when missionaries were evacuated in 1927. What was to have been their March issue of that year was printed in the June issue of The Augustana Foreign Missionary, and subscriptions to Honan Glimpses were completed by The Augustana Foreign Missionary as well. (See AUG 24/1/4). An explanatory note about the change stated, "Hereafter our missionaries will write for the A.F.M."
