Hautzig, Esther, 1930-2009
Variant namesEsther Rudomin Hautzig was born in Vilna, Poland in 1930. Her most celebrated book is The endless steppe, an autobiographical account of her life from ages ten to fifteen, when her family lived in exile on the steppes of Siberia.

Esther Rudomin Hautzig was born October 18, 1930, in Vilna, Poland (now Vilnius, Lithuania) and immigrated to the United States in 1947. She is the daughter of Samuel and Chaja Rudomin. In September 1950 she married Walter Hautzig (a concert pianist). They have two children, Deborah Margolee and David Rudomin. Esther Hautzig attended Hunter College (now Hunter College of the City University of New York), 1948-50.
Throughout the 1950s, Hautzig worked in the book industry in various capacities, including. P. Putnam's Sons, New York City, secretary, 1951-52; Children's Book Council, New York City, publicity assistant, 1953; Thomas Y. Crowell Co., New York City, director of children's book promotion, 1954-59, consultant, 1961-68; freelance children's book consultant, New York City, 1959--.
Hautzig's first book, The Endless Steppe, was published in 1968. The book describes life in Siberia, where the Soviets sent her and her family in 1940. She continued publishing children's stories and craft books, many of which won awards.
