Edward Fletcher Norcross was born in Derby, Vermont, on May 12, 1853, and died on November 12, 1926. His father, Austin Norcross, was a Baptist clergyman, born in Massachusetts in 1817; his mother, Anna Nichols Norcross, was born in New Hampshire in 1824. E. F. Norcross graduated from the Randolph (Vermont) Normal School and pursued classical studies at Derby and Worcester academies. He taught school for five years in the northern part of the state, perhaps near his home in Derby. He graduated from Howard University Medical School in Washington, D.C., in 1883. He took a course at UVM medical school, graduating in 1884. He practiced medicine for a short period in Wolcott, Vermont. In 1885 he started his practice of medicine at Island Pond, Vermont, where he remained the rest of his life, except for an 1887-1888 stint back in Washington studying dentistry and pharmacy. There is a certificate crediting him for service in the Volunteer Medical Service Corps in 1918. He was active in school affairs, serving as chairman of the school board and superintendent of schools. He seems to have owned considerable real estate and managed others, judging from some of the financial diaries.
E. F. Norcross married Elizabeth Rebecca Bartlett on November 24, 1898. She was born October 30, 1872, and died January 5, 1913. A son, Joseph Bartlett Norcross, was born on December 6, 1901, but died two years later. Another son, Stoessel R. Norcross, was born in 1904.
