Dummer, Ethel Sturges, 1866-1954.
Ethel Dummer, philanthropist and social welfare leader, joined the National Child Labor Committee and the Chicago Juvenile Protection Association, was a founder and trustee of the Chicago School of Civics and Philanthropy, gave the funds to establish the Juvenile Psychopathic Institute, gave financial support to El Retiro School for Girls, a detention home in Los Angeles, directed by Miriam Van Waters, and financially supported social science research by scholars. Katharine Dummer Fisher (1892-1961), her daughter, was active in Chicago and Illinois civic affairs, especially those concerning education and children, and in the League of Women Voters on the local and national levels.
