Ethel Dummer, philanthropist and social welfare leader, joined the National Child Labor Committee and the Chicago Juvenile Protection Association, was a founder and trustee of the Chicago School of Civics and Philanthropy, gave the funds to establish the Juvenile Psychopathic Institute, gave financial support to El Retiro School for Girls, a detention home in Los Angeles, directed by Miriam Van Waters, and financially supported social science research by scholars. She also worked with prostitutes and unwed mothers, and published several books, including an autobiography. For futher information, see Notable American Women: The Modern Period.

Katharine Dummer Fisher (1892-1961), her daughter, was active in Chicago and Illinois civic affairs, especially those concerning education and children, and in the League of Women Voters on the local and national levels.
