Reed, Thomas Walter, 1870-1950.

Hide Profile

From 1885 to 1950, Thomas Walter Reed was an eyewitness to much of the University of Georgia's history, as well as one of the best-loved members of the campus community. Retiring as registrar in 1945, he began to draft a monumental history of the University. As Reed presented his typescript draft to the University in 1948 he noted, "It is not such as I would call anything like a finished piece of work, but it may do some good to file it away." Even without revisions, Reed's history has long been a favorite of researchers in the Hargrett Rare Book & Manuscript Library at the University of Georgia Main Library. Born on Sept. 20, 1870 in Atlanta, Reed entered UGA as a sophomore in Oct. 1885. He graduated with a master of arts degree in 1888 and a bachelor of law degree in 1889. In 1909, he was elected secretary of the Board of Trustees of UGA, and at the same time he became registrar and treasurer of the university. He remained registrar until his retirement in 1945 when he was designated registrar emeritus. Reed died on April 24, 1950. In the issue of The Red & Black following his death, an editor proposed that the men's dormitory be named in his honor. The Board of Regents approved the recommendation in July 1951.
