Hide Profile

John Gisborne, friend of Percy and Mary Shelley. Little is known about the life of John Gisborne save that he was often unemployed, though he was trained as a merchant in his youth. In 1800 he married Maria Reveley, a friend of William Godwin's, and together they moved to Italy in the following year. The Gisbornes became important friends of the Shelleys in 1818 when the young couple visited them at their Leghorn home. In 1821, John and Maria returned to England, but maintained correspondence with the Shelleys.
