Prominent Des Moines attorney. Ellwood moved to Des Moines from New York in 1856 in order to become the law partner of Talmadge E. Brown. Many of Ellwood's cases involved issues of land ownership and use and taxes. Among the parties involved in his cases were several Iowa counties, the state of Iowa, the Des Moines Navigation and Rail Road Company, the American Emigrant Company, several members of the Litchfield family (Electus B., Edwin C. and Elisha) and James May. In 1858 Ellwood ran as the Democratic candidate for Attorney General.
