Mildred C. Templin was born on October 30, 1913 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She earned her B.A. in 1936 and her M.A. in 1937 from the University of Wisconsin. She obtained her Ph.D. in child development at the University of Minnesota in 1947. Before becoming to Minnesota, Professor Templin was an instructor in the speech department at Purdue University (1936-1939). Professor Templin began her career at the University of Minnesota in 1943, as a graduate assistant in the Institute of Child Development. She remained in the Institute until her retirement from the University of Minnesota. Her area of research was language development and she conducted many of her studies on the development of language in deaf children.
