John Cooper Rankin was born in 1922 in Hamilton, Scotland. His father, Thomas, was a dental surgeon. He started at the University of Glasgow in 1939. In his first year, 1939-1940, he studied Mathematics, Natural Philosophy, Chemistry, and Engineering Drawing. In 1940-1941 he studied Mathematics II, General Engineering and Drawing. He then went on to take Advanced Mathematics, Electrical Engineering III, Electrical Design II and Radio Communication in 1941-1942. In his final year he studied Heat Engines III, Applied Mechanics III, Design II and Aeronautics, and received a prize for mechanical engineering design. He graduated with a BSc in Engineering in 1943 . He died on the 14th March 2008.
