Born in 1916, Chicago, IL; died October 4, 1998, Chicago, IL. Professor, author. Martin J. Svaglic attended St. Ignatius High School in Chicago before receiving both a bachelor's and masters' degree in English Literature from Loyola University Chicago in 1938 and 1940. In 1949 Svaglic received his doctorate in English Literature from the University of Chicago. He bagan teaching in the English department at Loyola in the late 1940s and remained on the faculty until his retirement in 1983. In 1964 Svaglic served as the Frederick Ives Carpenter Visiting Professor at the University of Chicago. Svaglic was a noted authority on 19th century English Literature, focusing on John Henry Cardinal Newman and the Oxford Movement, and Victorian literature. He published two editions of Newman's works - the Oxford English translation of the "Apologia Pro Vita Sua" and the Rinehart edition of the "Idea of a University". Svaglic was active in the Modern Language Association where he contributed regularly to MLS publications including "Proceedings of the Modern Language Association" and "Victorian Studies", and served as Chair of "Victorian Studies."
