Founded in 1860 by Christian Mack, Mack & Company was at one time Ann Arbor's largest department store. In addition to the sale of clothing and household merchandise, the company would come to offer other services as well, including an insurance agency, a bank, and the leasing of properties owned by family members to other businesses. In 1939, because of declining sales, the store closed.
