George Random (July 9, 1913 - October 4, 1990) worked as a farmhand in Meadville, Pennsylvania and as a farmer after moving to Sharon, Pa., in 1949. In 1952 he joined in the machine shop of National Castings Division of Midland-Ross Corporation, eventually becoming an inspector there. Random retired in 1976, six years before the company went out of business. During his years at Midland-Ross, Random represented Local Union 1477 of the United Steel Workers of America, serving as its director of labor education, as a representative on the union's grievance committee, and as chairman of the job classification and cooperative wage study programs. He also developed a health insurance program and founded the Shenango Valley Labor Education Association.
