This union was formed in 1857. The Melbourne Typographical Society began in 1867 and with the Geelong Typographical Society and the Ballarat Typographical Society formed the Victorian Typographical Union. This union began late in 1867 but endured only until 1871. The Melbourne Typegraphical Society absorbed the disbanded Northern Tasmanian Typographical Society in 1902 and merged with the Ballarat Typographical Society to form the Victorian Typographical Society in 1916 (when all other Typographical Societies formed the Printing Industry Employees' Union of Australia). The Victorian Typographical Society joined the P.I.E.U.A. in 1920. The Melbourne Typographical Society became the Victorian Branch of the P.I.E.U.A., the Ballarat Typographical Society the Ballarat Sub-Branch, and the Northern Tasmanian Typographical Society the Launceston Sub-Branch.
