Santa Cruz, founded in 1695 is located two miles east of Española. It is the second oldest parish in New Mexico. The parish church, the Holy Cross Church (La Iglesia de Santa Cruz) was built in the early 1700's. In August 1920, Father Salvador Gené, a member of the Sons of the Holy Family arrived from Spain. Archbishop Daeger assigned Gené to the Santa Cruz Parish where he served as pastor until 1956.
