Naylor, Phyllis Reynolds

Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, nee Schield, was born January 4, 1933 in Anderson, Indiana. She attended Joliet Junior College and received her B.A. from American University in 1963. Ms. Naylor began writing as a child, submitting stories to church and other magazines. In 1960, she became a full-time writer and published her first book for children, The Galloping Goat and Other Stores , in 1965. She is praised by critics for her honest, sensitive and sympathetic characterizations and realistic plots and dialogue. Ms. Naylor depicts many contemporary dilemmas facing adolescents today such as divorce, mental illness, death of a parent, and loss of faith. Her novels often focus on religious, ethical, and psychological questions. Ms. Naylor has also written a number of comic mysteries as well as humorous novels, fantasy stories, and gothic mystery novels. In 1992, she received the Newbery Award for Shiloh, about a boy and the dog he loves and tries to protect from its cruel owner. Ms. Naylor was also the recipient of the 1995 Kerlan Award, give by the Kerlan Committee in recognition of her contributions to children's literature.
