Porter, Rufus, 1792-1884
Variant namesCaptain R.K. Porter, according to records at the Society of California Pioneers, was born on May 1, 1792 in West Boxford, Mass., and died on Aug. 12th, 1884. We have no further information on him other than this reminiscence which does not refer to his personal life. A Rufus K. Porter, which the same birth and death dates, is also known for his book Aerial Navigation: the practibility of traveling pleasantly and safely from New York to California in three days (New York: H. Smith, 1849). This may be the same person.
