Biographical note: Herman Leonard was born in 1872 in Detroit, MI . He taught mathematics at various colleges, then came to the University of Arizona and was head of the mathematics department from 1915 to 1938 when he relinquished his administrative position and continued to teach until 1953. He died December 19, 1955. His wife, Ida Reid Leonard, was born in Ontario, Canada on March 16, 1875. She taught school in Canada until 1900, when she attended the University of Arizona and taught in the Tucson public schools until 1906. Joining the University staff in 1906, Mrs. Leonard was an instructor in mathematics and history until 1913 and earned her master's degree from the University of Chicago in 1910. In 1914 she became Arizona's first dean of women. Ida and Herman were married in 1923. Ida Reid Leonard died August 26, 1947.
