Phillis Wheatley Literary and Social Club (Charleston, S.C.)
Charleston (S.C.) club for African American women. The Phillis Wheatley Literary and Social Club is named in honor of the African American poet Phillis Wheatley (1753-1784) and was established by Jeanette Keeble Cox in 1916 as the Wheatley Community Club. Cox was a former teacher and the wife of Avery Normal Institute principal Benjamin F. Cox. From 1917 to 1937 the organization was known as the Wheatley Club. Closely associated with Avery Institute, the club supported the school's library and fund drives. The Club also supported various community organizations and sponsored cultural events.
