Douglas E. Clanin was born in Anderson, Indiana in 1940. He was the son of Howard P. and Sarah Elizabeth "Liz" (Weatherford) Clanin. Howard was the son of Arthur and Clara (Rissiek) Clanin. The Howard Clanin family also included Greg, Doug's younger brother. They lived in Anderson, Indiana where Mr. Clanin worked as a foreman at Delco Remy. Doug graduated from Madison Heights High School in 1958 and became a graduate of Purdue University in 1963. He went on to earn a M.A. from Indiana University, and finished all coursework towards a doctorate at the University of Wisconsin. He gained employment at the Indiana Historical Society in 1981. Among his duties, he served as editor of the William Henry Harrison Project and of the papers of Lew and Susan Wallace.

Douglas E. Clanin was born in Anderson, Indiana in 1940 and received his B.S. from Purdue University, his M.A. from Indiana University, and completed coursework towards his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin. While at the University of Wisconsin he worked on "The Documentary History of the Ratification of the Consititution" project. He came to the Indiana Historical Society in 1981 to serve as editor of the William Henry Harrison Project which culminated in the multi-microfilm reel publication "The Papers of William Henry Harrison" (Indianapolis: Indiana Historical Society, 1999). He also edited the papers of Lew and Susan Wallace for the Indiana Historical Society. Clanin, an Air Force veteran from the Viet Nam era, began his interviews of World War II veterans in 1983. He was instrumental in the Historical Society's Fall 1991 "Traces" issue commemorating World War II.
