Lawrie Tatum was born in 1822 and came to Cedar County, Iowa in 1844. He married Mary Ann Dean in 1848 and had four sons and a daughter. Tatum helped to found the Springdale Quaker meeting and was known as a friend to runaway slaves travelling on the Underground railroad. He served as Indian Agent for the Kiowa tribe in Fort Sill, Indian Territory and wrote the book "Our Red Brothers." He was appointed legal guardian for Herbert Hoover and his siblings when Hoover's parents died. Tatum also helped to found the Springdale Mutual Fire Insurance Company and the People's Bank of West Liberty. He died in 1900.
