Albert S. Manley was born in 1924, served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and graduated from Columbia University. After ten years in the insurance industry, he moved to Portland in 1961 to open a fencing studio. He was part time fencing master at Reed from 1963 to 1983. His Complete Fencing was published in 1979; he died in 1989.
