Moved to Fargo, N.D. in 1947 with his family, his father, Dr. Rainier Schickele taught at North Dakota Agricultural College. Attended Fargo Central High School, graduating in 1954. Graduate of Juilliard School of Music, also a freelance composer. He created a fictional composer named P.D.Q. Bach and presents musical programs based on this charcter. Lives in Bronx, New York City.

Composed in gratitude for the hospitality of Swarthmore College student hosts, Charles A. Miller (bassoonist) and Victor W. Ludewig (flautist). The composer's name on the manuscript is John Peters, a pseudonym for Peter Schickele.
