Bates, Issachar, 1758-1837
Variant namesIssachar Bates was a Shaker who traveled for the sect as a missionary. He was born in Kingham, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, on Jan. 29, 1758. He served in the American army during the Revolutionary War and married Lovina Maynard in May 1778. They had 11 children. He joined the Shakers at New Lebanon in August 1801. After years as a Shaker missionary, he died March 17, 1837, at New Lebanon.
