Charles McLean Fraser was born in Huron County, Ontario. After teaching in Ontario schools for several years, he went to the University of Toronto where he received his M.A. in 1903. He accepted a position as science master in a Nelson high school. Fraser's keen interest in marine life led him to the newly-established Pacific Biological Station at Nanaimo in 1908 and later on to graduate work at the University of Iowa. After returning briefly as Director of the Station, Fraser became head of the new Department of Zoology at the University of British Columbia in 1920. An internationally-recognized biologist, Fraser authored more than 100 scientific pamphlets and two books during his career. He retired from UBC in 1940 and was succeeded by W.A. Clemens as department head.
