Andrew Meiklejohn was born on the 30th of April 1899 . In 1918 he was invalided out of the First World War and entered Glasgow University to study medicine. He graduated as MB ChB in 1923 , and as MD in 1930 . Andrew Meiklejohn then entered general practice in England. Between 1931 and 1946 he carried out investigations into all aspects of silicosis which resulted in many statutory measures for prevention. In 1946 , he returned to Glasgow University as a senior lecturer in Industrial Health, a post he held until 1964 . He was a member of various national and international committees concerned with industrial health. From 1951-1953 he was the president of the Association of Industrial Medical Officers. His publications included contributions to many textbooks and journals, as well as his own work on pneumoconiosis, lead poisoning and the development of occupational health services. Andrew Meiklejohn died on the 27 October 1970 .
