In 1836, the Horticultural and Landscape Gardening Association of Williams College was formed from the union of the Landscape Gardening Association and the Horticultural Gardening Association which had been created several years earlier. It appears that Prof. Albert Hopkins may have been behind the establishment of the organizations "to improve and ornament the college grounds." With a membership comprising students and faculty, the Association over the years concentrated on such projects as: setting out trees and hedges, building fences, setting stone steps, planting flowers, establishing gardens, laying out or remodeling walks, and constructing arbors. The Horticultural and Landscape Gardening Association was superseded in 1864 by the Sunrise Club, whose constitution stated that it was established "to secure healthful & pleasurable outdoor exercise and to improve the college grounds."
