Hacker was a member of the national board of the National Organization for Women; she coordinated NOW's task force on AT&T. She and her husband, Barton C. Hacker, helped found NOW chapters in Ames and Des Moines, Iowa, and Houston, Texas, and she was active in the Iowa Civil Liberties Union.
