McIntire, Sam, 1915-1988.

Michigan State Police officer, later mayor of Mackinac Island, Michigan, and owner of the Iroquois Hotel on Mackinac Island.

Sam McIntire began his career as a State Police aide to Michigan Governor G. Mennen Williams. Because Governor Williams maintained a residence on Mackinac Island, McIntire often accompanied the governor there. Through these visits, McIntire came to love the Island and decided that he wanted to live there himself. In 1954, he retired from the State Police and, after some time working in Detroit, he and his wife, Margaret, purchased Mackinac's famous Iroquois-on-the-Beach Hotel. For more than thirty years, McIntire actively involved himself in Island civic affairs, serving for twenty years as a member of the City Council and three terms as the Island's mayor. In addition, McIntire was founding president of the Star Ferry Line, and also a member of a group that purchased the Chippewa Hotel. He died in 1988.
