The function of the University Curriculum Council is to advise, support, and represent the Academic Vice President in matters of learning, teaching, and curriculum. In the 1970s, the University's Curriculum Council was reorganized into a smaller body and given greater policy-making powers than in the past. The new organization consisted of seven representatives from the academic colleges. The administration directed each academic department to examine its curriculum with a view to decreasing course offerings by 25 percent. It was left to the deans and department chairs working with the Curriculum Council to determine which classes should be cut and where the resulting savings could be most profitable used.
