Robert Olds earned his commission in the Aviation Section of the Signal Reserve in 1917 and received his final promotion as a Major General in 1942. Highlights of his career included duty with the War Plans Division of the Office of the Chief of the Air Service, as the Chief Inspector at Langley Field, as Commander of the 2d Bombardment Group at Langley Field, as commander of several goodwill flights to South America, and as commander of the Air Corps Ferrying Command. After his last assignment in Washington, Olds was hospitalized for arthritis, suffered a heart attack and died from complications of pneumonia at the age of 46.
