Helen (Maley) Hefferan was born in Carlisle, Pa. in 1870, the daughter of Thomas E. Maley and Sarah T. (Gibbons) Maley. She was educated at the Chicago Normal School and the University of Chicago; in 1892 she married William Stephen Hefferan, a Chicago lawyer. They had three children: William S. Jr., Thomas E.M., and Helen M.

HNH taught at the Chicago Normal School for seven years as a professional training teacher. She was a life member of the National Congress of Mothers and president of a number of parents' and educational associations during her life.
