In 1977, to promote social justice in South Africa, Reverend Leon H. Sullivan propounded a set of principles for companies conducting business in South Africa. This dynamic voluntary business code subsequently became known as the "Sullivan Principles." His code differs from all other codes for companies doing business in South Africa. It is the only code that requires annual independent evaluation of individual company activity in South Africa. The results of the analysis are released in the public domain. To be eligible for Signatory status and subsequent evaluation, companies doing business in South Africa must: 1) express a committment to the Principles by writing to Reverend Sullivan; 2) pay annual assessments ranging from $1000 to $8400 depending on worldwide sales; and 3) submit a report for evaluation on an annual basis.
