As a member of the Disciples of Christ Church, American Lyrel Teagarden worked as a missionary in China, 1920 to 1951, in Jamaica, 1952-1956, and in Washington State at the Yakima Indian Mission during World War II. Teagarden published short stories, articles, and poems in Christian publications and produced six volumes in Chinese for teachers of religious education in China.
