Amos Stoddard was born in Woodbury, Connecticut in 1762. As a young man Stoddard served in the Continental Army. Returning to Massachusetts , he read law and served as an officer in the suppression of Shay's Rebellion. Stoddard was commissioned the first civil and military commandant of Upper Louisiana. He was wounded and died in 1813 while in military service during the War of 1812.
