Garcia, Gustavo Filipe Barbosa
Variant namesGustavo C. "Gus" Garcia was born in Laredo, Tex., on 27 July 1916 and raised in San Antonio, Tex. He graduated as valedictorian from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1932, received his BA from the University of Texas in 1936, and his LLD in 1938. He served in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate Corps, as first assistant city attorney in San Antonio, and as a member of the San Antonio Independent School Board. Mr. Garcia is remembered for his legal efforts to improve education and working conditions for Mexican Americans, including his arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court on segregation of juries in the case of Hernandez v. The State of Texas in 1954. Gustavo C. Garcia died on 3 June 1964 in San Antonio, Tex.
