Founded by Dr. Ralph C. Smedley in Santa Ana, California, Toastmasters began as a small organization to provide public speaking opportunities and fellowship. Over the next twenty years it grew into an international organization composed of many small local chapters. Since its inception, Toastmasters has had over 4 million members worldwide. The University of Wisconsin--Eau Claire Student Toastmasters was founded in 1979 to assist student members in developing speaking, listening, and leadership abilities. The group ceased to exist in 1992.
