Decker, George Henry, 1902-1980

George Henry Decker (1902-1980) was born in Catskill, New York. He earned a B.S. degree from Lafayette College in 1924 and commissioned in the infantry in the same year. In 1937 he graduated from Command and General Staff School. He was deputy chief of the Third Army and then the Sixth Army between 1942 and 1943. He made brigadier general in August 1944 and major general in June 1945, while chief of staff of Sixth Army. His post-war assignments included commander of VI Corps, from 1955 to 1956. He rose to the rank of general in June 1956 and became deputy commander of U.S. European Command. In 1957 the Army appointed him commander in chief of United Nations Command Korea. From 1959 until his retirement in October 1962, he was vice chief of staff and then chief of staff of the U.S. Army. His decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit, and Bronze Star.
