The position of Vice President for Research and Graduate and Studies was created in 1965. It became part of the responsibilities of the Vice President for Academic Affairs in 1969-70 and was eliminated in 1978.

The first Long Range Planning Committee for the System was appointed in January 1967 by President Weaver with Raymond Peck as the chairman. In 1968 the name was changed to Steering Committee for Long Range Planning with Peck continuing as chairman.
