Ballinger, William, 1894-1974
Variant namesWilliam George Ballinger went to South Africa in 1928 as an advisor to the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union of Africa (I.C.U.), a black trade-union. After the collapse of the I.C.U. in the 1930s, Ballinger worked with its successor, the Society of Friends. From 1948 to 1960 he represented Transvaal and Orange Free State Africans in the Senate. Ballinger married Margaret Hodgson in 1934. He died in 1974.
